Surface Techniques & Glazing is a 2-month course designed for students who would like to explore decoration, color, and texture in ceramics.
Glazing is where ceramic pieces truly come to life. In this course, students will learn how to approach glazing with more confidence, control, and creativity while discovering a range of decorative surface techniques.
You will come to the studio once a week to explore different methods step by step. Throughout the course we will work with both leather-hard clay and bisque-fired pieces, learning how to enhance ceramic forms through carving, texture, color, and layered surface treatments.
Students will experiment with techniques such as sgraffito carving, impressing textures, inlaying colored slips, piercing forms, and working with underglazes and oxides. The course also introduces practical glazing methods and helps students understand how to avoid common mistakes.
Instruction is adapted to each student’s pace, with demonstrations and guided experimentation. Participants are encouraged to bring bisque-fired pieces or leather-hard work in progress to explore different decoration techniques.
By the end of the course, students will have a broader understanding of surface decoration and glazing, and will feel more confident finishing and presenting their ceramic work.

Materials
We recommend working with CIRCA’s studio clay, glazes, oxides, and engobes so that firing results remain predictable and safe for the kiln.

If you would like to bring your own bisque ware, glazes, slips, or stains, please contact us in advance so we can confirm that they are suitable for use in our studio.
