From Slab to Sculpture

Are you inspired by the coil-built vessels of Magdalene Odundo, the meaningful sculptures of Simone Leigh, or the storytelling of Grayson Perry? These artists choose hand-building and we love it too.

In this course, you'll explore ceramic art away from the wheel, working with pinch-pots, slabs, coil techniques, and a special cut-out glazing method. Your concepts will be developed from references, using sketches to explore your ideas and build a strong starting point. We'll discuss form, proportion, and architectural thinking, balanced with intuitive making and your personal approach. Later sessions cover surface treatments, texture development, slip decoration, and glazing techniques, bringing each of your sculptural vessels to a thoughtful finish.

You'll leave with completed pieces that reflect your vision, technical foundation, and artistic voice, along with a deeper understanding of hand-building and sculptural design.
