In 2011, after breast cancer surgery, I made a plaster cast of my chest. I didn’t know what I was facing and whether I would be able to keep my breasts. I thought, when this is “all over” I will do something beautiful with the cast. In an obvious sense the carrying is literal but the piece is mostly about the emotion between knowing and not knowing, the weight that carries and the effort of allowing. In this piece, I am letting go of an embodiment and sense of self and trying to reconcile or embrace what may be an unpleasant unknown. To find a new beauty in the bandages, the scarring, the markers for treatment and in whatever comes after.
