Ann Bates

Working from her home in Derbyshire, in the UK, Ann creates hand-built ceramic funerary urns and memory boxes designed and made with consideration, patience and love.

Ann’s distinctive style has evolved from emotional responses and associations with the landscape through the study of geological formations, Neolithic markings and textures found in Nature.

Using the coiling method to build a vessel Ann feels a deep connection to the material and to our Neolithic ancestors who used this same slow and painstaking technique to produce vessels.  She echoes their patience and use of natural objects, such as sharpened sticks and seed heads to decorate and pattern her vessels. 

Influenced by ancient burial traditions Ann creates contemporary pieces that are relevant for today.  She firmly believes that the vessel chosen to honour a loved one should reflect the life it represents whilst at the same time bringing some comfort to those who remain.
