These light switch plates exist between two homes, shaped by materials gathered in Brooklyn where I recently lived, and Toronto, where I have returned. They carry traces of a neighborhood marked by contrast: grand brownstones alongside subdivided apartments, their differences concealed behind sandstone and brick façades.
The clay body is made from recycled porcelain blended with coffee grounds from a Brooklyn Navy Yard roaster. The glaze incorporates excavations from a Bedford-Stuyvesant brownstone construction site, with additional finishes using wood ash from a pizza restaurant and stone slurry from Greenpoint. Each plate brings together fragments of the city into an intimate domestic realm. As I rebuild my roots in Toronto, my material palette shifts toward my new locale. With each batch, traces of my former home are replaced with new introductions. The work becomes a record of migration, memory, and the process of belonging.
